When there are no good boys available, what’s a (seemingly straight) girl to do? Pine over a lovely dead guy in a graveyard, obviously. For most young goths, such pining is the end of the romantic line: dead guys gonna stay dead. But in Lisa Frankenstein, the sweet, decayed corpse gets reanimated (via lightning and/or a tanning bed), and young Lisa (Kathryn Newton) gets her heart’s desire.
Then it’s time to do some murder, obviously.
Here’s the synopsis:
A coming of RAGE love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.
Cody clearly knows a thing or two about teen girls doing murders; it would be hard to be as excited about this film were it from any other writer. The movie is the directorial debut of Zelda Williams, and clearly the costume designer (Meagan McLaughlin), music supervisor (Garrett McElver), and production designer (Mark Worthington) deserve kudos here as well: The over-the-top ’80s vibe is chaotic perfection, from Lisa’s gothy Madonna-esque getup and blue eyeshadow to her bedroom decor and the song choices.
Lisa’s moldering object of affection is played by Cole Sprouse, who doesn’t utter a single word in this trailer, just grunts affectionately. Who could ask for more?
